Voir dire is your first and longest chance to interact with your potential jurors ... this is the time to connect with them, to understand their perspectives, and to frame the thesis of your case. While every question you ask should be geared toward understanding their perspective, you can also provide your side’s perspective at the same time. Deciding who to strike has been the subject of thorough case law and has reached the Supreme Court of the United States. A portion of this talk will focus on how to ethically evaluate the venire panel, while not depriving jurors of their Constitutional right to serve on a jury, because of their race or gender. This CLE program features streaming video and downloadable audio presentations from a seminar by the Houston Bar Association (HBA) on August 11, 2023. Some of the subjects include:

  • Being Prepared

  • Winning Over Your Panel

  • Filtering Out the Bad Apples

  • Telling Your Story

  • What You Can't Ask
