CLEonline.com, together with the Houston Bar Association and the Texas Lawyers' Assistance Program (TLAP), are pleased to present a special online CLE presentation designed to help attorneys develop strategies to cope with the stress associated with their chosen profession, as well as how to identify and handle subsequent issues pertaining to mental health and substance abuse. Studies have shown that, of all professions, lawyers have the highest rates of depression and, tragically, statistics also suggest that 15% of individuals suffering from depression will choose to end their lives. Additionally, as many as 20% of attorneys also struggle with alcohol and substance abuse issues. The goal of the Texas Lawyer's Assistance Program is to provide resources to educate, empower, and help attorneys to be healthy, in mind and body and in doing so, to enable them to provide the best legal representation for their clients and to live well-balanced personal lives. This course features streaming video and audio (as well as downloadable MP3 audio) presentations from a live CLE seminar on this topic that was originally conducted by the Houston Bar Association on October 14, 2015. You can access this presentation on demand at any time during the course of the seminar session.

Some of the subjects for this course include:

  • Pressures Facing Members Of The Legal Profession

  • Personal Stories of Depression and Substance Abuse

  • Signs and Symptoms of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Issues

  • Most Effective Treatments and Strategies Available

  • Texas Lawyer's Assistance Program and Resources

Special thanks to Cameron Vann, of the Texas Lawyers' Assistance Program, for her exemplary work and tireless efforts in reaching out to all attorneys in order to bring about greater awareness of these extremely important issues facing members of the legal community. Cameron Vann is a B.S. graduate of the University of Texas, received a Master of Education from the University of Houston, and earned her Doctor of Jurisprudence from the University of Houston. The Texas Lawyers' Assistance Program helps lawyers learn to find solutions for dealing with substance abuse and mental health issues, as well as offering enlightening new ideas about strategies for healthier lifestyles for attorneys.
