** available any time of day and in time increments convenient to you through end date above **, together with the Houston Bar Association, are pleased to present a special online CLE program designed to address the current concerns and issues associated with the rights and protections of the transgender community within our legal system. Our highly esteemed speaker, Phyllis Randolph Frye, is an Eagle Scout, a former member of the Texas A&M Corps of Cadets, a US Army veteran (1LT-RA 1970-72), a licensed engineer, a licensed attorney, a father, a grandmother and a lesbian wife. She is acknowledged as being the "Grandmother" of the national transgender legal and political movement. She is a senior partner in the Houston law firm of Frye, Oaks, Benavidez and O'Neil. Phyllis Randolph Frye is the first, out, transgender judge in the nation (and possibly - no one has disputed it yet - in the world)." This course features streaming video and audio (as well as downloadable MP3 audio) presentations from a live CLE seminar on this topic that was originally conducted by the Houston Bar Association on September 14, 2016. You can access this presentation on demand at any time during the course of the seminar session.

Some of the subjects for this course include:

    • The Early Transgender Journey of Phyllis Randolph Frye

    • Transgender Discrimination in Employment

    • Transgender Discrimination in Education

    • Discrimination in Health Insurance Coverage

In 1999, she was given the International Foundation for Gender Education’s “Virginia Prince Lifetime Achievement” award. In 2001, she was given the National LGBT Bar Association’s (a.k.a. Lavender Law’s) highest honor, the “Dan Bradley Award.” She was honored beginning in 2009 by Texas A&M University with an annual “Advocacy Award” given in her name.
